DXVA and video playback

04/12/2008 – 23:15

DXVA (DirectX Video Acceleration) uses the graphics card to decode video, so all the CPU has to do is a bit of housekeeping and audio decoding. Typically that means that a 1080p video uses

Setting up a PC media centre for perfect playback

02/11/2008 – 22:55

I have finally got my HTPC working well, after much fiddling around to get things perfect. Turns out it’s no easy task, especially compared to my old XBOX media centre which pretty much just worked. I am using an Abit A-S78H with 780g chipset (see my post about it), meaning Radeon 3200 graphics with hardware [...]

Fixing "little box" problem in Firefox

09/10/2008 – 10:21

When you don’t have the right international fonts installed you get little square boxes with four numbers in them instead of the right character when trying to view a page in Firefox. I think this also happens in IE and Opera, but I have not tested. Anyway, the solution is to get the right fonts [...]

Attacking data in RAM

14/05/2008 – 11:52

Today’s Hack a Day post linked to this article on recovering encryption keys from RAM, so I thought I’d look into defences against this kind of attack. There are simple ways to defeat this, and although not 100% reliable they are pretty effective. You have to consider what sort of situation this attack is likely [...]

USB HID descriptors and Windows

06/03/2008 – 20:03

While working on my USB/PSX joystick controller project I noticed that a) Windows isn’t very tolerant of some things and doesn’t care about other stuff, and b) MAME was giving some weird results. In the end, the Windows thing came down to needed to pad out the reports the microprocessor was sending back to a [...]

On-demand only anti-virus and anti-spyware

28/01/2008 – 20:20

The problem with “malware” (viruses, trojans, spyware, adware etc) scanners is that not single program detects everything. Check my previous post about online multi-av scanners. Online scanning only works on one file at a time though, so some software to scan an entire PC is needed. What is needed are “on-demand only” AV programs. Most [...]

Online backup: ruined by crap proprietary software

03/01/2008 – 20:52

Why is it all online backup services demand you use crap proprietary software or a naff web interface? I have recently been looking around for a free online backup system to safeguard a few hundred megs of data. Just in case my house burns down and takes all my other backups with it. Unfortunately, they [...]

Optimising Windows for gigabit file sharing

01/01/2008 – 20:46

The default TCP/IP settings in Windows are not very good for gigabit networking, and seem to limit you to around 20MB/sec when transferring files. Even with pure TCP tests I couldn’t get over about 30MB/sec with the default. The solution is to increase the TCP Receive Window and enable Window Scaling. You can edit the [...]
