Miranda IM automatic update script

28/08/2010 – 18:45

Found a useful script to auto-update Miranda IM. They really should create an update system for it. I modified the script to work on my system and with newer releases in 7zip format. chdir /D update c:\portable\gnu\wget.exe http://code.google.com/p/miranda/downloads/list -O data.txt type data.txt|findstr /i unicode.7z 1> data1.txt del data.txt ren data1.txt data.txt c:\portable\gnu\wget.exe –force-html -c -i [...]

Windows 7 Tweaks

16/08/2010 – 20:34

Finally got around to installing Windows 7 on my main machine. As usual there are a lot of tweaks that need to be made. The Start Menu has some nice features but I really don’t like the way the All Programs section works now. Fortunately you can bring back the old cascaded menu and keep [...]

Making the Umax PowerLook 2100XL scanner work on Windows 7

15/06/2010 – 14:56

I had an interesting challenge at work a few weeks ago. A customer wanted a new PC running Windows 7 but he needed to keep using his rather old A3 scanner, a Umax PowerLook 2100XL. Umax only provide Windows XP drivers and installing them on Windows 7 stops the system starting up. Something about the [...]

Making a one session temp folder in Windows

30/05/2010 – 17:16

Back in the Amiga days we had a RAM disk. It was perfect for storing all kinds of temporary files as it was extremely fast and would be cleared every time the system rebooted. Windows doesn’t have anything like that. I found a way to make something similar. I use a temporary folder on a [...]

USB devices in VirtualBox

31/03/2010 – 23:15

Getting USB devices to connect to the guest OS in VirtualBox can be a bit tricky. I run it on Windows so it might work differently on Linux, but anyway… The key is to understand that in order for the device to be detected it has to be connected while the guest OS is running. [...]

Comparison of PDF viewers

16/09/2009 – 23:14

I have been using Sumatra PDF for a while now, and while I’m mostly happy with it, I would like something with a few more features. Everyone seems to suggest Foxit, to the point where it is now the first result on Google for “pdf viewer”. Unfortunately, the rendering quality of Foxit is well below [...]

List of things installed by iTunes 9

15/09/2009 – 21:41

iTunes for Windows is by far the most bloated bit of software I have ever seen. The shear amount of crap it installs in unbeliveable: iTunes itself Quicktime Apple Mobile Device service Bonjour Service iPod Service iTunesHelper startup task QTTask startup task Firefox plugin iPod Classic drivers iPhone drivers Apple Software Update Grand Total: 276MB [...]

FileTypesMan, a useful little tool

16/08/2009 – 23:17

I discovered FileTypesMan from Nirsoft today. It’s a handy little bit of freeware that gives you more control over file types than the built in Windows configuration tool. In particular, you can exclude certain types of file from the “Recent Files” list. Simply open FileTypesMan and select the type of file you want to change: [...]

In search of the perfect text editor

02/08/2009 – 14:21

I mainly use Notepad2 as my text editor, but it lacks a couple of useful features. In particular, there is no support for tabs and no spell checker. As with most Scintilla based editors, there is no “hard” word wrapping either (where text is wrapped to, say, column 78 with line breaks). In my quest [...]

eBay no-brand media centre remote control review

01/06/2009 – 10:11

I have been looking for a suitable remote control for my media centre for a while now, and decided to take a chance on a £25 2.4GHz remote control with built in optical track ball from eBay: I was worried that it might be a bit cheap and perform poorly, but was pleasantly surprised by [...]
